Microsoft to Roll Out its Own SIM Card for Windows Devices

The software and tech giant Microsoft is currently testing out a mobile data app which allows Windows 10 devices to connect to various mobile carriers to access mobile internet, even if they don't have a contract with the providers, which suggests that the computing giant is working to roll out its own SIM cards.

The news has been leaked through an app listing titled “Cellular Data” that has given reference to the SIM card. Since Microsoft is offering such a service for the first time, its complete use is currently unclear. However, conjectures of Verge are that the company is trying to build a Mobile Virtual Network (MVN), which will make use of other network providers to deliver cellular service to Windows devices.

Microsoft said in a statement on Tuesday, “We are always exploring new features for Windows 10. Right now, we are exploring additional ways for customers with Windows 10 PCs and tablets to connect to data services." "We have nothing further to share at this time,” it added.

The description also mentions that Microsoft plans to come out with an international roaming service in the future, and that the app will offer a "secure, high-speed mobile connection" at any time, but only with Windows 10 devices.

The Microsoft’s latest move is likely to be a trial to compete with Apple, which also offers a SIM for selected models of iPad, allowing the users to switch between mobile carriers without changing the SIM card. Apple was also reported to be working on a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) service early this year, but the company has declined to comment on these reports.
